THE WADDEN SEA (Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark)

This intertidal zone in the SE part of the North Sea lies between the coast of NW Europe and the Frisian Islands. It forms a shallow body of water with tidal flats and wetlands, and high biological diversity. Its 3,900 square miles touch a 310-mile coastline; the dikes built to control flooding make it one of the most human-altered habitats on earth.

The Castles at Bruhl, Germany

THE CASTLES AT BRUHL (Germany)

The Augustusburg and Falkenlust Palaces were built at Bruhl in west-central Germany at the start of the 18th century. The three-story Augustusburg Palace forms a U, and was once home to the prince-archbishops of Cologne. It was built in 1725 on the foundations of a medieval castle. Falkenlust was built between 1729 and 1737 as a hunting lodge.

Naumburg Cathedral, Germany

NAUMBURG CATHEDRAL (Germany)

The Cathedral in Naumburg, Germany, most of which dates back to the 13th century, demonstrates the transition in style from late Romanesque to early Gothic. In the western "choir" are 12 outstanding sculptures of the cathedral's founders, works of the "Naumburg Master." Begun in 1028, the cathedral became Protestant at the Reformation.

Le Corbusier's Architecture, seven countries

LE CORBUSIER'S ARCHITECTURE

UNESCO has cited 17 buildings of Le Corbusier, a Swiss-French pioneer of modern architecture who was active for over 50 years. They are in seven countries: France (10); Switzerland (2); Belgium, Germany, Argentina, India, and Japan (1 each). They include museums; residences, apartments, and housing projects; a factory; a chapel; a monastery; and a government compound.
