DUTCH WINDMILLS (The Netherlands)
Large areas of the Netherlands ("Holland") have been drained and recovered from the sea, creating a centuries-long battle to hold onto the land. A key component in this struggle is the network of more-than-just-picturesque windmills; 19 of these, at Kinderdijk, have pumped water without interruption since 1738.
