AGADEZ (Niger)
Agadez, "Gateway to the Desert," lies on the southern edge of the Sahara. Founded before the 14th century, it grew in the 15th when nomadic tribes settled there for trading; salt caravans still arrive. The ancient quarter contains earthen dwellings as well as palatial and religious buildings, including an 88-1/2 foot high mud brick minaret. It is Niger's 5th-largest city.
