Jelling, Denmark

JELLING (Denmark)

Two massive carved 10th-century runic stones, one by Gorm the Old honoring his queen, Thyra, the other by his son Harald Bluetooth honoring them and celebrating his own exploits, stand between two originally Bronze Age barrows with later burial mounds raised over them for Gorm and Thyra; they're joined by standing stones shaped like a ship. A 10th-century church reportedly stands on a pagan burial site.
