TIKAL (Guatemala)
One of the major sites of Mayan civilization lies surrounded by lush vegetation in the rainforest of northern Guatemala. Tikal was inhabited from the 6th century BCE until abandonment at the end of the 10th CE. The ceremonial center contained temples, palaces, and public squares approached by ramps; the surrounding countryside is scattered with the remains of dwellings.
