HIERONYMITES' MONASTERY AND TOWER OF BELEM (Portugal)
Construction of the Hieronymites' Monastery began in 1502 at the entrance to Lisbon Harbor, on the site of the former Church of Santa Maria de Belém, where monks provided assistance to seafarers. The nearby Tower of Belém, finished in 1519, was built to commemorate Vasco da Gama's 1497-1499 expedition to India, the first sea route to link Europe and Asia.
