AIGAI, Greece
In the 1850s, excavations began near Vergina, in northern Greece, which proved to be the site of Aigai, first capital of Macedonia. A monumental palace is there, lavishly decorated with mosaics and painted stuccoes; also 300+ burial mounds, one of which held Philip II, whose son Alexander would have been buried there, too, had he made it home from conquering the known world.
